๐ชจ How This Gravel Calculator Works
Gravel is the awkward material: you measure the area in square feet, the supplier stockpiles it in cubic yards, and the invoice is often written in tons. Getting from one to the other needs two steps โ a geometry step that is exact, and a density step that is an estimate. It is worth knowing which is which.
The geometry is unarguable. Length ร width gives area; area ร depth (converted from inches to feet) gives cubic feet; divide by 27 for cubic yards, because a cubic yard is 3 ft ร 3 ft ร 3 ft. The tonnage is the estimate: it multiplies your volume by an assumed bulk density in tons per cubic yard, and bulk density genuinely varies with the quarry, the gradation and how wet the pile is.

Units and order of operations: depth is entered in inches and divided by 12. The extra-material percentage is applied to volume, and tonnage is computed after that adjustment โ so the Tons figure at the bottom already includes your extra allowance. The per-area rows inside each card show cubic yards and tons without it.
Densities used (tons per cubic yard): crushed stone 1.4, pea gravel 1.4, river rock 1.5, decomposed granite 1.42, crushed limestone 1.5, base gravel 1.6. Nothing is rounded to whole tons โ order in whole units yourself.
โ๏ธ The Density Number Is the Weak Link โ and Ours Runs High
This is the part most gravel calculators quietly skip. The tons figure is only as good as the assumed density, so here is ours checked against a published one.
The EPA's Standard Volume-to-Weight Conversion Factors, which compiles figures from FEECO International and the Tellus Institute, lists loose gravel at 2,565 lb per cubic yard (1.28 tons), crushed stone at 2,700 lb (1.35 tons), loose rock at 2,570 lb (1.285 tons), and crushed limestone at 85โ90 lb per cubic foot โ which works out at just 1.15 to 1.22 tons per cubic yard.
Set against that, this calculator's densities sit at or above the top of the EPA's figures. Worth knowing what that table is, though: it is a construction-and-demolition debris recycling conversion, not a quarried-aggregate specification, so treat it as a sanity check rather than as the number to order by. Its 1.4 for crushed stone is about 4% heavier than the EPA figure; its 1.5 for crushed limestone is roughly 25% heavier. That is deliberate. Bulk density is not a fixed property โ it moves with gradation, moisture and the quarry the stone came from, and no single number is right for every yard. These defaults sit at the heavy end so the tonnage errs toward over-ordering rather than leaving you short two-thirds of the way down a driveway, which is the expensive way to be wrong.
To tighten it, ask the yard for their own tons-per-cubic-yard factor for the exact material you are buying, and use the calculator's cubic-yard figure rather than its tonnage. Volume is the number this tool computes exactly. Weight is the number it approximates. A supplier who has run it will have a measured figure, though note C29 is a laboratory method on oven-dry material: the standard itself says the relationship between compaction in the test and in a hauling unit or stockpile is unknown, and yard material carries moisture. Ask for the tons-per-yard they actually bill by.

A gravel driveway 40 ft long and 12 ft wide, 6 inches deep, crushed stone, 10% extra:
- Area: 40 ร 12 = 480 sq ft
- Volume: 480 ร (6 รท 12) รท 27 = 8.89 cubic yards
- With 10% extra: 8.89 ร 1.10 = 9.78 cubic yards
- Tonnage: 9.78 ร 1.4 = 13.69 tons
Order roughly 10 yards, or 14 tons โ but confirm which unit the quote is in, because at these quantities the two are not interchangeable and the gap between a 1.28 and a 1.5 factor is over a ton of material.
๐ Choosing a Depth
The depth options here โ 2 inches for landscaping, 3 for pathways, 4 as a general default, 6 for driveways and 8 for heavy use โ are this tool's own presets, not a code requirement, and we are not going to dress them up as one. Depth for anything that carries vehicles is a design question that depends on the subgrade beneath it, the drainage, and the axle loads crossing it. The FHWA and South Dakota LTAP Gravel Roads Construction & Maintenance Guide (Ken Skorseth, August 2015) is the standard reference for how those factors interact, and it recommends a minimum first-layer thickness of 6 inches where gravel is placed over a geotextile on weak ground.
The practical reading: a 4-inch layer assumes a firm, well-drained, already-compacted subgrade. If yours is soft clay, it will pump the stone down into the mud and no amount of arithmetic on this page will fix it.
โ ๏ธ Common Mistakes
Ordering tons without knowing the yard's conversion factor. The single most expensive mistake on this page. Two yards can quote the same "ton" and mean volumes that differ materially.
Confusing loose yards with compacted yards. Gravel is delivered loose and finishes compacted. A base course loses meaningful thickness under a plate compactor, which is exactly what the 15% "compaction" extra-material option is for โ and it is still a rule of thumb, not a measured shrink factor for your material.
Underestimating the weight. At 1.4 tons per cubic yard a single yard is about 2,800 lb. That is beyond the rated payload of most half-ton pickups. Check the sticker in your door jamb, not the size of the bed.

How much does a 50 lb bag of gravel cover?
Very little. At 1.4 tons per cubic yard, 50 lb is about 0.48 cubic feet โ roughly 2.9 sq ft at 2 inches deep, or 1.4 sq ft at 4 inches. A 10 ร 10 area at 4 inches would take around 70 bags, which is why anything past a wheelbarrow or two is bought loose. At 50 lb a bag that is roughly 3,500 lb of material โ more than the rated payload of most half-ton pickups, so check the sticker in your door jamb before loading it in one trip.
How much will 1 ton of gravel cover?
At 1.4 tons per cubic yard, one ton is about 0.71 cubic yards (19.3 cubic feet): roughly 116 sq ft at 2 inches deep, 77 at 3 inches, and 58 at 4 inches. Change the density and every one of those numbers changes with it.
How much gravel do I need to cover a 10x10?
100 square feet. At 4 inches deep that is 1.23 cubic yards, or about 1.73 tons of crushed stone. With the calculator's default 10% extra it becomes 1.36 cubic yards and 1.90 tons.
How much do 5 cubic yards of gravel cover?
Five cubic yards is 135 cubic feet โ 810 sq ft at 2 inches deep, 405 at 4 inches, 270 at 6 inches. Coverage is entirely a function of depth, so a yardage on its own does not answer the question.
This is a materials estimate for ordering. It is not a pavement design. It does not model subgrade strength, drainage, frost depth or traffic loading, and it must not be used to decide the thickness of a driveway, a parking area or anything a vehicle will sit on. Its tonnage output is an approximation built on an assumed density โ treat the cubic-yard figure as the reliable one.
